Aqua Mix Grout Colorant Restoration Procedure

Aqua Mix was the first company to start manufacturing grout colorants for grout restoration professionals and DIY consumers also. . . Aqua Mix's grout colorant is a water based epoxy product that is extremely durable and is the preferred choice of grout colorant for many grout restoration professionals.

Sometimes grout is damaged beyond repair and it can not be effectively cleaned.  When this happens it is time for a more aggressive grout restoration technique to get the grout looking like new again.  For ceramic and porcelain tile installations using Aqua Mix's grout colorant is the most effective way to restore the grout.  It is not recommended to apply the Aqua Mix grout colorants on porous stone tile installations including slate, limestone, and marble.

As you can see below the tile countertop grout is extremely dirty and dingy looking and the ugly grout ruins the appearance of the countertop. The Aqua Mix grout colorant can be used on floors, showers, bathrooms as well as countertops as seen in the picture below.

After cleaning the grout with the Aqua Mix pre treatment cleaning product you can apply the Aqua Mix grout colorant to the grout with a normal toothbrush or using the Aqua Mix grout colorant applicator brush.  In this picture we have just substituted a smaller head toothbrush for the grout colorant applicator brush that was in the Aqua Mix grout colorant kit.  Using a smaller head toothbrush can be useful for applying the grout colorant to smaller grout joints.  You should try to get as little grout colorant on the tile surfaces as possible.  It is ok to get some of the Aqua Mix grout colorant on the tile surfaces since this excess grout colorant will be wiped off the tile surfaces later.

You can wipe the excess Aqua Mix grout colorant off of the tile surfaces using the supplied white scrub pad.  You can also use a normal chamois cloth purchased from a dollar store to speed up the grout colorant application process.  You should read the Aqua Mix grout colorant kit application directions before beginning the grout colorant application procedure.  If you are not comfortable using a chamois cloth to speed up the process then it is best to use the white pad according to the manufactures instructions.

We allow the aqua mix grout colorant to dry 10-15 minutes until the grout colorant begins to harden on the tile surfaces. Then take the damp chamois cloth and gently wipe away the excess grout colorant off the tile surfaces. Be careful to not place any pressure on the grout lines so you do not wipe the grout colorant out of the grout lines. Frequently turn the chamois cloth over to reveal a clean area of the towel and continue wiping the excess grout colorant off of the tile surface. After the chamois cloth has become totally saturated with grout colorant rinse it in a bucket of warm water.  Then ring out the chamois so as little water as possible is left in the chamois cloth and continue wiping off the excess grout colorant.

After you have wiped away all the excess Aqua Mix grout colorant from the tile surface then wait about one hour for the grout colorant to dry up in the grout lines.  At this time you will probably see a grout colorant haze build up on the tile surfaces.   This grout colorant haze can easily be removed with a damp soft cotton towel and some gentle scrubbing on the tile surfaces.

When you are restoring grout with the Aqua Mix grout colorant it is always a good idea to remove any old caulking and do any other tile repairs prior to applying the grout colorant. This will ensure an even appearance of the grout colorant and will not allow any dirty old caulk to make the grout colorant look moldy, dingy and dirty. In our example we recaulked around the sink and also around the perimeter of the countertop.

Aqua Mix Grout Colorant kits come with one (1) 8oz. bottle of the Grout Colorant and One (1) one 8 oz. bottle of the Pre Treat Acidic cleaner.  This acidic cleaner is important to get the maximum bonding effect for the Grout Colorant.

You also get an applicator brush and a white pad used to wipe the excess grout colorant off of the tiles.  You may find it easier to use a chamois cloth which are available at most dollar stores to wipe off the excess grout colorant off of the tile surface.

The Aqua Mix grout colorants are available in a wide selection of colors to choose from.

The 8 oz. bottle of grout colorant that is supplied in the Aqua Mix grout colorant kit is enough to handle most countertops and smaller areas up to about 100 sq/ft.  For larger floors and open areas of tile and grout you can use the Aqua Mix grout colorant coverage chart.

Applying a grout colorant can be a difficult and laborious task.  Even with the proper techniques it can still take a long time to complete and not look as good as you wanted.  You may want to hire a professional tile and grout cleaning and restoration contractor to clean your tile and grout and apply the grout colorant for you.
