Grout Restoration Procedure

For many people the tile installation looks dirty and dingy because of the grout.

Sometimes the grout is damaged beyond repair and it can not be effectively cleaned to make it look good.  When this happens it is time for a more aggressive grout restoration technique to get the grout looking like new again.  Often times in showers or bathtub surrounds there is thin unsanded grout joints that need to be regrouted to make the tile installation look new again.  For other tile installations including ceramic tile floors and where there is thicker sanded grout a grout colorsealing procedure is the most effective way to restore the grout.  It is not recommended to colorseal porous stone tile grout including slate, limestone, and marble but you can colorseal non porous tile installations with travertine and granite tiles.

The grout restoration procedure begins with an effective cleaning of the grout

The grout must be thoroughly cleaned to remove all the dirt, grease and grime from grout so that the colorsealer will have good adhesion to the grout.  It is also recommended to clean the grout with a mild urea acidic cleaner prior to colorsealing the grout.  The mild acidic cleaner  will open up the pores of the grout and make the colorseal stick to the grout much better.

before grout restoration

After the grout is thoroughly cleaned and dried you can apply the colorsealer with a toothbrush or other specialized grout colorsealing applicator.

Usually the grout colorseal manufacturer will provide the proper grout colorseal applicators but a small toothbrush will work just fine.  Apply the colorseal in small sections of the tile and then go back with a damp towel or chamois cloth and wipe off the colorseal from the tile surface.  Do not let the colorseal dry too long on the tile surface or it will be extremely difficult to remove.

during grout restoration

After you have completed a section of the grout restoration procedure move on to the next section.

Always go over each section thoroughly to make sure you have removed all the colorseal from the tile surface.  It is ok to leave the colorsealer haze on the tiles as this can be wiped off later when you are done colorsealing the entire floor.

When you have finished with the grout restoration procedure go back over the entire surface with a damp towel and wipe up all the colorsealer haze

You should be able to see that your grout looks as good or better then new.

after grout restoration

A grout colorseal application is an excellent way to restore your grout and make your whole tile installation look like new.

The grout colorsealer will make the grout have an even appearance and make cleaning your grout as simple as wiping it with a damp cloth.  This grout restoration procedure will also seal the grout so that cleaning a colorsealed floor is extremely easy.  By just using a pH neutral cleaning solution you can simply mop away dirt and grime from your colorsealed grout.  Additionally there are many colors of grout colorseal to choose from so that if you were never happy with the color of your grout you can change it to virtually any color you desire.

A colorseal grout restoration procedure is  an advanced process that can be done by many industrious homeowners.

You may also consider hiring a tile cleaning service contractor to apply the colorseal.  Tile and grout restoration contractors will have the experience and tools to save you time and effort in applying the colorseal.  Additionally a tile cleaning service will have advanced cleaning machines to thoroughly clean and extract all remaining residue from your grout to insure the colorseal will effectively stick to the grout.  For more information about hiring a tile cleaning service please refer to our tile cleaning service contractor information page here.
